Experience and Leadership EXPERIENCE
With demonstrated skills as a law enforcement leader in both rural and metropolitan areas, Van Hollen is an experienced, strong and tough prosecutor. In his last full year as US Attorney he prosecuted 75 percent more criminal cases than the current Attorney General did in her last full year as U.S. Attorney, just four years prior--75 percent more. A fiscal conservative, Van Hollen underspent his budget during all three of his years as U.S. Attorney. During this time, the number of criminal cases filed by Van Hollen's office increased by 15% in 2002, 7% in 2003 and 23% in 2004 totaling a 53% increase during his tenure. As a federal prosecutor, Van Hollen concentrated aggressively on:
LEADERSHIP Van Hollen has served on the Ashland/Bayfield County Domestic Violence Task Force, the Ashland/Bayfield County Bar Association, a board member of the Western District Bar Association, and helped create the Bayfield County Criminal Justice Management Committee. As U.S. Attorney, Van Hollen served on the Attorney General's Advisory Committee subcommittees on Native American Issues, Controlled Substances, and Firearms and Violent Crime. Van Hollen has been a member of the Ashland, Bayfield, Dane and Washburn County Republican Parties and has been active with various Masonic organizations including extensive efforts with the Shrine, which raises millions of dollars daily to provide free medical care to children, and the Scottish Rite, which offers free tutoring to dyslexic children. He has been a member of the Wisconsin Masonic Home Board, Wisconsin Masonic Benevolent Activities Board, and the Wisconsin Masonic Foundation Board. Van Hollen has served as a volunteer firefighter for the Iron River Fire Department and as a volunteer first responder for the Iron River Ambulance Department. |
